During one film in which Tom Mix was being overcome by a crook, an inebriated patron became so excited that he leaped from his back row seat, raced down the aisle, pulled his knife from a boot, and cut the screen trying to hurt the bad guy. About 1928 Mr. Joe Hayden sold his equipment to Mr. Albert Hilburn, who opened Hilburn Theater on what is now Ada Sipuel Avenue. At that time it was Idaho Avenue. It operated five or six years until Mr. Hilburn died. Some African American men worked for the railroad, and a few worked at the cotton gin and compress.

The economic structure of our community was typical of African American communities of the period. For all the talk of a New South, employment opportunities for blacks were limited. At the top of the socio-economic structure were teachers, ministers, and a few professionals. Three men in town claimed to be doctors, but only one, W. A. J. Bullock, was able to write prescriptions for regulated drugs. The others used patent medicines and foul-smelling home remedies. There was one dentist, Henry Pruitt.
