The swelling at the top of the neck decreases suddenly in diameter to form the tenon’s shoulder. The two stumps are turned in the same sequence and manner as the legs. I turn tapered tenons at both ends. The tenon on the lower end is the same size as that on the legs and it can be tested using the same gauge. You can make another gauge for the upper tenon which fits into the arm. Bore a ⁄" hole in a piece of scrap and taper the hole with the reamer. Both the sack back and the continuous-arm chairs have two short spindles behind each stump.

Reamer as described later. To use the gauge, you will have to remove the leg from the lathe. To recenter the leg perfectly after gauging the tenon, you must relocate the end on the drive center exactly as it was. This can be difficult to do. I grind a small notch in the beveled edge of one of the spurs on the drive center. This notch creates a dimple in one of the marks left by the spurs in the end grain of the turning. Aligning the dimpled mark with the notched spur should re-center the leg perfectly.

Although you cannot measure the bit directly against the angled blades, you can sight along the bit to each blade to estimate the desired angle. Start the socket with the bit perpendicular. As you turn the brace, gradually pull down to the final angles. Refer to bevel squares as you make this adjustment. You can gain a better vantage for judging the splay be squatting down in front of the seat, still holding the top of the brace. When the angles are right, bore about halfway through the seat. indd 50 squares.
